Some people questioned Gordon Beckham saying, “I want to be to the White Sox what Derek Jeter is to the Yankees.”
How can a youngster who never has played a Major League game make this kind of statement?
That is not the way I saw it. I became a big fan of Gordon Beckham when he said those words in the spring of 2009. To me, Beckham was saying that he not only wanted to bea great player, but that he also wanted to be a leader.
Beckham had nothing but success in his baseball career in High School, College, the Minor Leagues and the Major Leagues …….until 2010.
Baseball is a very difficult game to play and at some point every player will have to deal with failure. It is my preference to see players struggle at some point during their Minor League career so they will be prepared to deal with adversity when they face it at the Major League level.
Gordon Beckham struggled for the first three months of the 2010 season. He dealt with failure for the first time and it took him awhile but he eventually started hitting well and had a good second half. I think he is going to be a very good Major League player.
It’s my feeling that Ted Williams was right when he said, “The hardest thing to do in sports is to hit a baseball.”
